 Need help! Daughters age 4 and 7 have a school week dedicated to sci fi. Needs some book ideas that are suitable for them to read and dressing up Ideas for the non uniform day. Cant get past princess' from star wars and buzz light year.
Hope you can help a poor crime reader out of her hole.

Buzz Lightyear to the rescue! :D Well there are worse role models to follow. Welcome to the board.

The main problem for me is recommending books that I read at that age that aren't out of print now. Amazon keeps blinking on and off, so I'll come back to this later.

I do remember:

Ted Hughe's 'Iron Man' in primary school at the age of 6 or 7, and though I didn't fully understand it at the time, but after the teacher discussed it with the class, it still sticks in my mind 16 yrs or so later.

On the edit: some of the titles on the following list look like fun:

As long as you don't dress them up as the "Jabba's slave girl" Leia in Return of the Jedi.

Science Fiction at that age is pretty hard to recommend. If it's Science Fiction & Fantasy however that makes it a lot easier because you have your typical Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland type stuff to play with.

Maybe you could dress them up as Spy Kids - that's science fiction.

Yeah. Hmmm, in a few years you'll have all of William Sleator's work coming right up... but I think not quite this young.

What do people think about the Danny Dunn books (out of print, but quite possibly available at any local library)? Is 7 old enough for them? I would say yes, but I was an advanced reader at that age. And a 4-year-old would not get anything out of them.

All the examples I can think of are for a little older than 7, and certainly older than 4, but here's a couple of lists I found online:

Here's a list for grades 3-6, which may be a little old, but a good start:

Here's ones for younger readers:

The second link especially has sci-fi for very young readers. I can't comment on the quality since I haven't read them, though. Four years old is tough for sci-fi!
