What type of fantasy do you prefer ?

Personally i love epic fantasy Martin, Erikson etc

But what others things within the story do you like to see?

I find that some books (Feist) in my opinion are brilliant stories however after all the build up and the battle against the odds the end seems to be just a little to easy for the good guys.

I love a story where you dont know whats gonna happen, where there are more than one main character who you follow and not just one kitchen boy out to save the world. Probaly why Martin and Erikson are my faves so far in the genre.

What do you like to see ?

I have a somewhat narrow range of tastes when it comes to fantasy. I call what I like "pure fantasy", although I don't know if that term is accurate. Simply put, I like my fantasy to be all fantasy. I don't like: alternate history, cross-over fantasy, sci-fi/fantasy mix, humor fantasy, urban or contemporary fantasy, dark fantasy or horror (I don't mind some dark elements, such as the werewolves in Kearney's Monarchies of God series), or Arthurian fantasy (although I have studied it and found it somewhat interesting).

None of these are preferences are carved in stone, of course. I've read some very good fantasy series that had some small sci-fi element. I also don't mind if a fantasy world is obviously based on some historical civilization or even if the story is loosely based on some historical event.

Other than all that, I'm not particular. I like epic fantasy, military, plot-based, character-based, female or male protagonist; whatever, as long as it's "purely fantasy."

It depends..

I go through periods where I read <insert genre> like a madman, I mosy always like Epic/Heroic though.

I'm still looking forward to getting in the mood to finish Ash , The Years of Rice and Salt and The Standing Dead.. wouldn't be able to read more than a few pages right now without putting em down..

I'm not a big fan of the whole epic business. Give me a nicely plotted, original and weird piece of fiction and I'm happy.

I have pretty much the same feelings as Godmage. And I did enjoy The Monarchies of God as well. The one exception is Neil Gaiman's work. I had read most of his work before I started reading any other fantasy books.

My first love will always be good, epic fantasy. However, IMO, I've pretty much exhausted the supply of that sub genre. Currently, I'd have to agree with Iskaral Pust on the type of books he likes.

I like the more unusual stuff, myself. I also prefer a good emphasis on character. Without interesting characters, I just lose interest.

Another thing i really enjoy is watch characters interact with each other. For example Tehol and Bugg in Midnight Tides. For me the way they reacted to each other and the way there conversations went , it was just great to read.

Erikson amazes me how he has so many character that you can love and really get into.

I'm a bitsa - I read all types and enjoy all types so I have no overall preference though I tend to like reading epics more than simpliar ones if I'm in the mood

Anything with dragons... although I'm looking for something different than the usual dragon stuff.
