I just received GotM from Amazaon Canada ( I am from the States). I have yet to hear one bad thing about this series.

I am just curious, where would you put the Malazan series in comparison to:

Song of Ice and Fire
Lord of the Rings
Memory of Sorrow and Thorn
Coldfire Trilogy
Kay's Lions of Al-Rassan and Tigana
Drizzt' books
Dragonlance series
Deverry books
Shanarra books
Sword of Truth series

There are tons of others, these came immediately to mind...

I have not read the deverry series but I would rate the Malazan Empire above all those series except for the Guy Gavriel Kay books. Thats just my opinion.

I would put Erikson's series above most, but not ahead of ASoIaF... that series is untouchable.

above all of them.

GRRM is easy to touch.

Even above the mighty Robert Jordan, Caldy? :D

I would say that Malazan is better than GRRM, though not by much

I think people forget just how good GRRM is because its been eons since he last published a book... A Feast for Crows will remind us though.

I put Malazan behind ASoIaF because above all, I enjoy good characterization... and apologies to Erikson fans, his characters aren't drawn as well as Martin's. But if you like lots of magic, and dozens of superhuman immortal races in your books, Erikson is your man!

Erikson's strenght is not his superhuman races and his high magic setting; it's the meaning that is hidden behind his writings. Just think how many meaningfull quotes you can have out of his books.

I would put Martin slightly above Erikson. In my opinion, that last revelation Dujek and Whiskeyjack had in MOI felt contrived and took away somewhat from the book. On the other hand, Martin has yet to mess up with his plot.

Neither of them can touch Guy Kay though.

Everybody else is on assorted levels underneath these three.

Song of Ice and Fire
RB - I really can't say that Malazan books hold up to these, I found the SoIF books far more gripping

Lord of the Rings
RB - Tolkeins writing is... magical. Can't compare.

Memory of Sorrow and Thorn
RB - Interesting, but in this instance, I prefered Williams, for the depth of emotion he hits.

Coldfire Trilogy
Kay's Lions of Al-Rassan and Tigana
Drizzt' books
RB - as much as I enjoy these, Malazan is a more mature and interesting work. Gotta go Malazan.

Dragonlance series
RB - like comparing comic books to literary works. Malazan.

Deverry books
Shanarra books
RB - Malazan books are more original, and better the deeper you go. Gotta go Malazan here.

Sword of Truth series
RB - Malazan books can't see far enough down to compare to these lowly works...

RB - My takes above. Not likely to match the norm in terms of likes and dislikes, but there it is.
