I saw this at Barnes and Noble the other day. Then I saw an advertisement for it above this forum. Anybody read this or know what it's about? Is it any good?

The Guin Saga-

Is a projected 100 book series. That is, 100 books long.

89 have been completed so far, and they have begun marketing them stateside.

I have not read any of them, and cannot comment any further.

Fader, I thought you were totally full of it when I read this, so I went and did some research on my own. It is in fact planned to be 100 books....which is probably one of the stupidest things I have ever heard about.

I have been eyeing them too in my B&N. They have book 3 or 4 out. I have been delaying because I want them to go into paperback before I try one.

I too read about the 100 books, but that they had already been written and published in Japan. The comment was that they fell off in quality the longer the series went. I saw that written somewhere - don't know if the writer had read them, or was just passing on what he had been told.

They are now selling them in the US, but I have no idea if they will publish all of them. If they plan to it may be a very long wait for paperbacks.

Seems to be an attempt to emulate the SF Perry Rhodan series to me... (look here if you don't know what I mean!) (http://www.thealienonline.net/columns/rcsf_rhodan_aug02.asp?tid=7) but (sitting on the proverbial fence) if it can work for things like St*r W*rs and St*r Tr*k, (the latter must surely be 100 books +!), why not in a Fantasy setting? ;)

*bites his tongue while trying not to mention the words quality, breadth and width in the same sentence* :D

I don't think the idea of a 100 book series is all that bad ( I'm thinking Dragonlance here). And yeah, there has got to be around 100 Star Wars and Star Trek books.

But the difference is that the author, from the beginning, stated her intention to write 100 books. Perhaps if it got popular and started selling well, then she could have decided to write more. But to START with the idea of 100 books just seems, well, stupid and unnecessary.

Everything I've read (surprise surprise) says that the quality really takes a sharp incline after the first couple.

So, what is this series about?

Something Japanese :D. Seriously that is all I remember. I did read the blurb on the back of the first HC, but it didn't stick with me.

Inspired by the 25-million bestselling series in Japan—114 volumes and continuing---- is what i read on the below webpage. it also has a preview there as well.,..

www.vertical-inc.com

it's about a guy who wakes up with a leopard mask on and no memory.
There are two separate books, one is the novel and the other is the manga. Both are being put out by the above company, Vertical. Set to release before Xmas in December... there is a hardcover already available. I've read the hardcover 1-3. I loved it. It's fresh and its a lot of it! :D

To start a series of 100 books seems daunting but fortunately the series is divided in cycles. The first 5 novels form the first cycle/series and tell one story.

In the US these first 5 novels have been published in hardcover. These are out of print but the trade paperbacks will be published later this year. I believe the first book (Leopard Mask) will be published in paperback in december this year. The second volume in january 2008 etc...

The books are in fact sword & sorcery. I believe the writer is heavily influenced by Robert Howard's Conan stories. And I don't believe the stories are really oriental. It's about swordsmen, evil monsters, maidens in peril. Not about samurai, Shoguns and Japanese mythology.

I don't know if the publisher (Vertical) is planning to translate the next cycles in this series. I suppose they're going to see how well this sells. For European fans who can read French, the books are also being published in French.
