I recently read a Bangkok 8 by John Burdett. An interesting mystery/Thriller set in Thailand. It starts with an impossible, and creepy murder and takes you through Thailand and the after effects of the Vietnam war, the sex trade, and the drug craze. The book is about the differences between east and west, a son's attempt to bridge both cultures and understand himself. The main character is a half-caste (American/Thai) cop who as is tasked to solve the mystery. There is a good bit of Thai buddhism and some mysticism that wraps around and flavors the mood.
An interesting read.
