Many years ago I read a series of SF/FF books about these creatures that attacked in the dark. I remember that the main character in our present day world was brought into another world by a wisard. In this world they lived in fear of these dark creatures and could never be outside at night.

I was struck by some of the similarities to the movie "Pitch Black" and I wanted to read the series (trilogy?) again but I can't remember who wrote it or the name.
