Anyone reconize this series of books?

Trying to remember to recommend to a friend. It was written about 20 or so years ago. It started with an elderly gent on a cruise, when something happened such as a meteor hitting the boat and he was transported to another "place". He woke up in a younger mans body, on a desert like world.
He inherited a large cat that he could communicate with telepathicly. This species of people had hair more similar to fur (then hair) on their head.

That's pretty much what I remember, any takers?

Sounds like the Gandalara Cycle by Randall Garrett and Vickie Ann Heydron. Grrr! I'd forgotten all about that series. I remember loving it when I read it. Suppose I'll have to go and try to find the entire cycle now.

And Bingo was his nameo! Thank you much Radone. I can see the cover of a few of the paperbacks in my minds eye, I can remember some generalizations, BUT I just couldn't remember the authors.

And the same here. I was living in Florida at the time I started reading the series, and I found it difficult to put down w-a-y back then.

I'll be cruising the used B-stores soon.

Thanks again.
