I'm very curious to see if they'll stick with the chronology of the book. If they do, they might find it a bit hard to make the second part anywhere near as captivating as the first.
I saw the trailer too the other day (before the Mummy returns), but the only thing I recall was that my ears hurt because the sound was so loud, a few mass-fighting scenes, and a strange smile forcing itself upon my face after seeing "Strider" for the first time. (And the mass scenes from the mummy's return looked better to me at that.)
Overall though, the trailer was just too short to judge, so I will let myself be surprised when it actually hits the theaters.
I agree with Michael Ende's book being a must-read. It's just as little of a children's book only as The Hobbit is one.
(Talking of the Hobbit: should you feel like ROFL-ing some, check this out. Mr Spock's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins (http://www.tolkientrail.com/rivendell/nimoy.zip) )

i have to say,i'm really not looking forward to the LOTR movie.they're really going to kill it,and elijah woods looks too pathetic!OK,i'm biased, but they're just not going to do it.Their cast won't be able to play the characters as they are in teh book, even if they try.and they're going ot have a million and one soppy lines from galadriel and maybe even arwen.i've heard that they're going ot be putting in a whole load of love scenes as well.Who's playing strider(aragorn) does anyone know?
sorry,i'm prejudiced, but it's really going to kill the book.

Wastra in some castlists Sean Astin and Sean Bean who plays Boromir got mixed up, propably that the explanation.
I actually think Liv Tyler isn't that bad a joice, and all rumors in the net that Arven will join the fellowship were refuted by Peter Jackson multiple times.
She will get a larger part in the book, but the way I heared it, that will be done by giving her the parts of Glorfindel at the ford and of Elronds sons when they come south with the Dunedain of the north and accompany Aragon on the paths of the dead.
For whoever asked Viggo Mortinsen (SP?) plays strider.
Silk lover it all comes down to expactations.
If you expect the movies to be an exact replica of the books or more particular of your imagination of the books, then you will be dissapointed.
If you accept that the movies while based on the lord of the rings stand in their own right, then I beleive you will be in for great entertainment.
A good (if not fantasy example) for this would be L.A. confidential. The book and the movie are quite different, the movie left out about half the plot a quarter of the characters nad changed what remained of the plot.
Still both are great, the movie is a work of art in its own right. Of course I would have wished for some of my favorite scenes to be in which were not, but the movie caught the atmosephere of the book perfectly and MOST important it WORKED as a movie.

I am so glad that Disney was prevented from doing to LOTR what they did to the Black Cauldron. No matter how bad Peter Jackson mauls the plot, he won't mangle it as much as those evil disney types abused Lloyd Alexander's Prydain chronicles.

Having seen the trailer for the film, I'm actually excited. The cinematography is really nice. Even if the movie turns out to be a dud, it will be a very pretty dud. So, I'm really looking forward to it now......
.....But then again, I don't like the books so there is very little at stake for me.

i am a huge tolkien fan and have been since i was first introduced to the hobbit by my uncle when i was 11. i am very much looking forward to the film, just from reading the actors/actresses comments on their experiences in filming the movie...
on an aside regarding other fantasy movies of the 80's, what is the general consensus on jim henson? i loved the other movies already mentionned, but two other great fantasy movies were labyrinth and the dark crystal. he was a creative genius...
