Windhaven - GRRM

I just started this book and...uh...

Well, the STORY is pretty engaging (reminds me a bit of Dragonsong/Dragonsinger - Anne McCaffrey)and it holds my interest though it's not something I think about or dwell on during the day as I did ASoIF and other of my favorite reads, but....

The dialogue is SOOOOOO atrocious. JK Rowling's dialogue is better than this. Sorry. (I use the comparison because I can see Windhaven as being targeted to young adults although I don't think it was/is...)
The dialogue so forced and full of the story's exposition. It's like that SNL skit where Chris Farley would ask questions stating the obvious. Like he'd interview Paul McCartney and ask, "Remember...remember when... when you were in the Beatles?"

I think GRRM is a genious and I know this was written twenty years ago. Forgive me if I place the blame on the co-author (name escapes me and I'm too lazy to reach over and grab the book) but I refuse to believe GRRM was ever capable of such poor banter.

It's so completely distracting to me. Think I'll rant more about this on another thread just for good measure - the thread about what makes good fantasy. And let me amend my statement. Not just character but believable DIALOGUE.

Anyone else have comments on this book? I haven't finished the book, so no spoilers yet, if you please.

No real comment to make other than I liked it when I read it. I don't remember the dialogue being that terrible, but it has been a long time since I read it, and I can't remember much about it.

The co-author is Lisa Tuttle, who's written some very good horror novels and short stories. Sometimes when two good writers collaberate the result isn't as good as what they write on their own. The Gypsy by Steven Brust and Megan Lindholm is an example of that, though both writers have said how much they enjoyed working together. Deus Irae by Philip K Dick and Roger Zelazny is another one.

If you want to read GRRM's good old stuff try one of his short story collections. Sandkings is probably the best one. His best novel is Fevre Dream a brilliant vampire story.

Ditto. I too remember reading this a long while ago and enjoyed it, though it is a long way away from SoI&F.

Finished it. I got used to the dialogue a bit...pretty good book/story. Could've been longer/gone more in-depth. But it was entertaining, nonetheless.

A 'filler' book, if you will, in between great epics.

Has anyone here read The Armageddon Rag, also by GRRM? If so, what's it about? The title sounds very inriguing.
