A friend of mine who is a teacher, wants to show her pupils a science fiction movie; they are around 13 year old. She asked me for advice but I was a little too short on ideas. What would you suggest?

Dear gods Sparhawk! You can't traumatize young minds like that! If you're going to start them out with serious horror, you should at least throw them Hitchcock or King! :D

The most infinitely age-appropriate SF movie I can think of is the original "Star Wars" movie. Can't go wrong there, even if it is a fantasy story in a SF setting.

Thanks for your answers. I'll suggest The Thing but I'm afraid it won't be adopted.
Any other suggestions besides Star Wars?

Like what sort of sci-fi are u looking for?

I recommend the following but they might be too violent for 13 year olds
Terminator 1 & 2
Alien/Aliens
Starship Troopers
Total Recall
Fifth Element
The Matrix
12 Monkeys
Minority Report
Stargate

Some classic sci-fi movies which I've never seen
2001:Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Planet of the Apes

There's also Dune

And if you're leaning towards family fun
ET
Cocoon
Close Encounters of a Third Kind
Back to the Future
Flight of the Navigator

I recommend the Dune mini-series. It's nothing too harsh for 13 year olds to sit through, it's a hell of a good story and you can actually learn stuff from Dune. The rampant drug abuse and huge length may be a bit of a putoff though.

I think Stargate the movie with Kurt Russell and James Spader would be a wonderful place to start.

Others:

The Abyss
The Arrival
Contact
Red Planet
Gattaca
The X-Files: Fight the Future
A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Blade runner or gattaca both seem like good choices. I'd recommend READING dune over watching the miniseries, though. Plus, weren't there some sex scenes in the miniseries?

Second both.
