Much in the same vein as 2004 scheduled releases (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6610), this is a topic we'd like to keep from straying...

Well, now is as good a time as any to begin our regular discussions of the books we are anticipating in the next and/or current year (of course depending on when you post).

A couple books that merit interest in the early part of 2005, for me are:
Cecilia Dart-Thornton's The Iron Tree - while I was generally underwhelmed by The Ill-Made Mute, I saw enough promise in her writing skills there for me to consider giving her work another read.

Jude Fisher is wrapping up her Fool's Gold trilogy with The Rose of the World.

Michael Moorcock is closing out his Eternal Champion cycle (supposedly) with The White Wolf's Son

Perhaps the one I am most looking forward to is the third novel in Greg Keyes (http://www.gregkeyes.com) Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone saga - The Blood Knight

Steve Erikson's "The Bone Hunters" the 6th book in the Malazan Series is due in July 2005 according to Amazon UK. He's mentioned that it should be wrapped up by December and could be an April Publishing according to malazanempire.com.

These are the ones that I anticipate the most:

*The Thousandfold Thought-R.S. Bakker (Fall)
*Feast for Crows-GRR Martin (Summer or Fall IMO)
*Soldier Son (Part 1 of the Speck's magic trilogy)-R. Hobb (July)
*The Bonehunters-S. Erikson (July according to the publisher)
*Blade of Fortriu-J. Marillier (September in Australia, part 1 "The Dark Mirror" is released in March in the UK and in May in the US).
*Olympos-D. Simmons (known as Sci-fi but has spectacular fantastical elements) (January).
*Mists of Everness-J.C. Wright (March)
*Odd magic-P. McKillip (April)
*Sword from Red Ice-JV Jones ( no specific date but I think it will be Fall).
*Merlin Codex III:The Broken Kings-R. Holdstock (Summer)
*Revenge of the Sith-M. Stover (April)

The Iron Tree is due in November this year in the UK btw, for those who can't wait. Fitz, when is The Blood Knight due?

Anyway, I'd like to report we have new books coming from Kay and Williams as well but that seems most unlikely.

Mithf - I think it is due Fall '05. I knew you'd bring up some titles I'd be looking forward to - Hobb, and of course Bakker and Stover.

I'm not even *considering* A Feast for Crows on the calendar of releases until GRRM informs us on his Web site.

A new Robin Hobb? That is cause for celebration, indeed! I am excited also by mention of forthcoming Stover and Dart-Thornton.

Berg, Brown and Caine all stand a good chance of releasing a second book in the latter part of the year. Eddings, Feist, Brooks and Newcombe (the four Riders of the Fantasy Apocalypse) all have scheduled releases later in the year as well. Their pestilence seems an annual event. Laurie Marks, Sean McMullen, Sarah Micklem, Victoria Strauss, Lorna Freeman, Sarah Zettel (the Isavalta book, not the Luna trash), Jennifer Fallon, Jacqueline Carey, Kate Elliott, Melanie Rawn (*gasp*), Martha Wells, Patricia Briggs, Diana Pharaoh Francis, Clive Barker, Karen Traviss, Stan Nicholls, Katherine Kurtz, James Barclay, Paul Kearney, Julian May, Kristen Britain, Lynn Flewelling, Kij Johnson, James Hetley, Jim Butcher (Codex Alera series), Philip Pullman, J.K. Rowling (so it is rumored and hinted), Laura Resnick, Michelle West, Jo Walton, Stephen Woodworth. All established authors who have work lined up for 2005 releases; whether they make it to the shelves or not, we'll see.

A number of new authors that are coming out (well some from Australia, so not new but new to the U.S.) as well that might prove interesting.

JohnH - I was expecting you'd drop in a nice bunch of titles.

I knew Marco was writing Sword of Angels and that it's the follow-up to The Devil's Armor but I've seen little about it being published next year.

Elliott's is the first of a new series, no?

Troy by David Gemmell? That's intriguing.

Elliott's is the first of a new series, no?

No. The first Crossroads book is not finished that I know of. Though it is being published by Tor instead of DAW so it might be out in 2005 as well (yippee!). Rather Crown of Stars , sixth and last book of Crown of Stars is due out in 2005. As of yet, DAW has not committed to a release date. UK has it scheduled for June/July release. It is unlikely that DAW won't release it about that time unless they are all brain dead.

Troy by David Gemmell? That's intriguing.

It is uncertain if this is the title of the book or the series. It is the first in a trilogy that, obviously, deals with the Trojan War. I don't know exactly what the series will cover though, the events prior to the fall? The fate of the winning Greeks? Perhaps even the events in the Odyssey? No idea. But it is coming out as I believe he has already delivered the manuscript.
