Where to send submissions?

Im new to writing and Im a bit surprised that there is not a thread already on this specific topic. I could have missed it of course, I searched but I couldnt find one.

Where would a new writer go to submit their work for review and/or possible publication?
Is there a list of magazines/website or such that can be contacted.
