From someone in a book group, I told her you guys know everything. :)

Here's what I know:
- the author is a girl of about 18 years
- the picture on the cover is by a friend of hers (so
she said on her web page)
- it's a fantasy
- the main characters are half feline, half human
- they used to kind of rule the world but then the
humans came back and now they have to be really
careful

That's all she remembered. She had the title/author at one time -- she was even at the author's website. But she's lost all that info.

I've never heard of a fantasy book featuring cats, or cat-like creatures.

Andre Norton writes about cats; maybe it's one of hers.

Tad Williams wrote a cat book, but this obviously can't be him.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass them on to her. I'm enjoying the google search -- I had no idea there were so many books with and about cats and cat creatures. Cats have their own genre, almost. :)

Andre Norton wrote a few cat books.

Star Ka'at with Dorothy Madler - Two intriguing stray cats communicate with Jim and Elly Mae, convincing them that the cats are aliens from another planet.
The mark of the cat
The Zero Stone
Catseye
The Gate of the Cat
Cat Fantastic - a whole series with Martin H. Greenberg

Breed to Come sounds like a possibility - When desperate measures failed to control what men had begun and could not stop, they fled their polluted planet, leaving behind an epidemic virus born of experimentation. Yet unlike men, whom the disease could destroy, the animals of the planet thrived, each generation more forceful and intelligent than the last. In the ruins of what was once a university complex a vast band of cats, more highly evolved that those on the outside, sought to master the works of man. And they learned that the Demons-as men were called-were not legendary, but real, as was the danger of their return to the planet. Then one day a spaceship landed bearing the feared exile race . . .
Ace Books - 1973

I can only hope its this book. There's not much else to go on really.

First of all:
Pam, thanks for mentioning this site, it's really great!

Then:
I'm the one who's looking for the book Pam mentioned. I remember some new things - besides it being published in 2000 or later.
The author has a name that seemed unusual - at least to me. I also think it was not set on the earth, but that could be wrong.

These might help.

Fifth Life of the Cat Woman by Kathleen Dexter
The Adventures Of Myhr by P.N. Elrod (2003)
Song Quest (2001) by Katherine Roberts (half-creatures, not cats specifically)
Hannah's Garden (2002) by Midori Snyder (Half-Fairy)
Winter's Orphans (2001) by Elaine Corvidae (half-fairy)
