The only one of Bierce's work I know for definite is An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge, and yes, I would say that it was horror, in a ghostly spooky kind of way. It was made into an episode of the (original) Twilight Zone.

I think his writing was a little more diverse than that, though - so perhaps it would be fair to say that some of his work was horror.

(link to work online HERE. ) (http://www.biercephile.com/work.cfm)

The Devil's Dictionary is not one I know, but having had a quick look through it, (link HERE, ) (http://www.alcyone.com/max/lit/devils/) I guess it could be seen as a book certainly, but a story/novel with a narrative, Hmmm - Probably not.

Interested to hear what others think - any other Bierce worth reading?

Thanks Duck. I'm sure I have read more, but that's what came to mind. Now that I've found those links, I'm going to have a read. :)

Thanks for the recommendation, though!

As far as I know, Ambrose Bierce was primarily a writer of horror. 'The Damned Thing' is one of my favourite stories, and one I'd love to make into a short film some day (even though I have little interest in making movies otherwise).

The Devil's Dictionary isn't a novel of course, but it is a marvellous compendium of mordantly humourous cynicism.

Bierce was also a journalist, and died mysteriously in Mexico covering Pancho Villa's revolt.

I have been reading alot of different material in relation to Gothic Tales of mystery and Horror!! Bierce is but one I consider to be Horror!(Also some mystery)

Some of his short stories I have are:

An Heiress from Redhorne
Beyond the Wall
The Haunted Valley
The Spook House
The Boarded Window

There are sooo many great authors to choose from!! I found different sites related to this! I will but mention a few authors, such as....Sir Authur Conan Doyle, Jon Kendrick Bangs, Elizabeth Gaskell, W.W. Jacobs...And so many others!!
