OK – it’s December. (I like to start with something obvious :) ).

Last month of the year, midwinter (or possibly midsummer!) and a time for celebration. This could mean lots of books to read!

So, what have you read in SF this month? What would you recommend to others as ones to read and buy, or conversely, what have you read and would you ignore forever more? Tell all!

Ho-Ho-Hobbit :)

I finished Neuromancer last night. Wow. When I started it I didn't realize it was part of a series, so I'm torn about which of my serieseseses to continue next. I think I might settle for reading the Sprawl stories in the Burning Chrome collection for now.

Moving between The Sprawl and Otherland, both in progress for me, may present problems - I carry different images of cyberspace and its resultant effect on reality in my mind for each.

I never knew Neuromancer was part of a series. Read like a standalone to me.

Not necessarily a series but there are links between the books. Some of the characters reappear in the other books such as Mona Lisa Overdrive. As far as I know Case doesnt show up again.

But the story of The Sprawl continues, and so does the story of Wintermute and the AI's from outer space, I understand.

Neuromancer
Burning Chrome has 3 stories set in The Sprawl
Count Zero
Mona Lisa Overdrive

Hmm, I never knew all that, though Neuromancer is the only Gibson I've gotten around to reading so far, so I'm not surprised that would have slipped by me.

I finally read "The Quantum Rose" by Catherine Asaro. I'd never read anything by her before, and I was worried that I wouldn't understand anything because it is part of her "Skolian Empire" series. However, it works very well as a stand-alone piece, and I understand why it got so many awards. I was impressed.

The main character is psychologically complex, both strong and weak at different times. So her is husband. Asaro depicts both an abusive relationship and a loving relationship very realistically. Some of the elements were too simple, and the main book-ending conflict didn't strike me as realistic. Also one of the planets they were on was a little too idealized to ring true to me. Still, I would definetly recommend this one. It reads pretty quickly and has some very good stuff in it.

I too enjoyed The Quantum Rose more than I was expecting. My main problem with it though was having to read it on the train and trying to hide the pink "SF Mills & Boon" cover :)

Finally finished Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson for the Book Club.
