Hello,

I'm looking for a humorous short story that I read in the 70's or early 80's. It involves a brilliant inventor who wakes up one day to discover that he had completed a robot while drinking heavily the night before, but can't recall its purpose.

The highly intelligent (and annoying) robot proceeds to take over the house and make his life miserable. The man even tries to escape by leaving home, but it somehow tracks him down by a process it calls "vastening", as if it had telepathic powers.

-- Possible spoiler? Just to be safe:
He finally remembers that the robot was designed as a beer-can opener, and upon commanding the robot to do the task, it becomes obedient.
Any ideas?

John Sladek wrote a number of very funny robot stories... one of his perhaps?

Try The Proud Robot: The Complete Galloway Gallegher stories by Henry Kuttner & C. L. Moore.

You can find out more information here. (http://www.bookloons.com/cgi-bin/Review.ASP?bookid=1834) I think these are the stories you're looking for, but they're actually from the '50s.

Try The Proud Robot: The Complete Galloway Gallegher stories by Henry Kuttner & C. L. Moore. Thanks! That's definitely the one.

Maybe I can buy one of the anthologies as a used book. Best of Henry Kuttner (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/OopBooks/oopResultsIsbn.asp?userid=y65p4fy98l&wid=63859341&origean=9780345244154&wbflg=N&page=%2Fbooksearch%2FisbnInquiry%2Easp) contains that story.
