I have always been that way with authors as well. With singer/songwriters too, come to think of it. When I was working on my Master's Degree, I went to live in Germany in order to learn the language well enough to read Nietzsche in the original German. I took a trip south from Munich over the Alps specifically in order to visit the small town that he lived in, Sils Maria. I read his letters and correspondence and I learned so much more about him as a person that it allowed me to read his books with a different insight.
