hmmm i think that often there are different represantations of main characters gender wise. Lots of male characters all seem to carry with them the idea of "honour" and glory, and just generally trying to be the best lol, female characters tend to be smater i reckon and more skilled at well whatever skills they're given, also they're much more open to thier emotions, many male characters have a habit of shutting themselvse off, usually as an attmept to protectothers but that always screws up but most of the time they're crud at sealing themselves up in the first place

I agree- I tend to like both sexes to be represented-probably 'cause I like to see the females outwit the guys...without them even realising it  :D .It always happens..the male character is the consistent one throughout until the big face off at the end, when the female reveals her true powers, wows the guy,he realises he loved her all along
The END. :D

this is true, and why I prefer female protagonitsts.
BUT.
if you're lucky you can find the rare books that have great male leads.
e.g. The Crow, Bartimaeus Trilogy etc.
One I only read recently is The Assasins's Apprentice. Very good. Though not read the next yet.
But with syaing the goals that people in fantasy often aspire to etc. you have to look at the context theyre wrote in, don't you think? Like The Mists of Avalon etc. Generally fantasy novels tend to be set in a Medieval time frame, so is it surprising?
