Ah, the second month of the middle of the decade (depending on where you are and who you talk to... )

So, what have you read whilst creeping around the Horror genre this month? What would you recommend to others as ones to read and buy, or conversely, what have you read and would you ignore forever more? Tell all!

OOPs - Meant to say that I've just finished Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison. IMO terrible title, (worse cover!), but the book was much better than I was expecting.

I was expecting something rather Anita Blake-like, (Blake-lite/light? :D) but it was a good page turner and the characters were a little more developed than I expected. Enjoyed it more than the last couple of Anita Blake's I've read.

I have to say that I am a complete horror newbie, almost completely uneducated in the genre. However, I picked up a collection of Lovecraft: "The Call of Cthulu and Other Weird Tales" ed. by S.T.Joshi. I read the first story, "Dagon," and my head didn't explode, so I'm happy with my progress so far. :D

It is Anita Blake Light - its a total rip-off. :) The demon is JC, and the Mouse guy is Richard.

It is good though. Not sure which AB books you have recently read, but the last ones are pretty bad. Harrison's book is more meaty than the early AB books -- the place she starts is equivalent to AB books 1-6.

The second book in the Harrison series just came out here - The Good, the Bad, the Undead . Not sure if you have it out yet.

Not really sure I would call it horror either, nor AB for that matter. Using the horror beasties in the real world is to me more SF than Horror :D

Veniss Underground is a story that could easily sit in horror altho it blends sf and fantasy as well. The fantasy bookclub are having a discussion on it at the moment if any horror enthusiasts have read it and never go into the fantasy section, so don't realise it's there.

Yeah - that didn't come out quite right. What I meant was that I was expecting something Anita-lite (and got it!) but it was better than I was expecting. (Does that sound better?)

I stopped with Anita at about Book 10, though I've got the others should I really want to pick them up at some point. Got plenty else I'd rather spend my time with at the moment.

The next Kim Harrison isn't available here in the UK (yet) though I have a copy coming from the States. And yes, I spotted the Sf references, going back to Richard Matheson's great I am Legend.

After recently seeing a replay of Carrie the movie by Brian De Palma on TV the other day, I've picked up my copy of Carrie by Stephen King again.

Kanin, do you have King's book On Writing? If you do, read pages 77-82, where King talks about the two girls at school that he based Carrie on. It's heartbreaking stuff.

He says he never liked those girls, or Carrie. He isn't explicit about why he doesn't like them, but I think it's because they allowed themselves to be victims.

Carrie's revenge relieves some of our guilt for how we've all treated the Carries we know. I think it's a great book.

AuntiePam,

Thanks for the heads up on that. I do have ON WRITING, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

In fact, I think I'll look that up right now.......
