So, the concept is the product of the military industrial machine. I never thought of it quite that way.

If God is a human invention, why does it have to be a mistake? More like 'hope'.

Within the context of the quotation, the author has little faith in either. God certainly is not construed to be a mistake to the majority of people in the world both today and historically. But has the invention of God by man benefited man in fact? If God is not man's invention, then the question is moot to being with. If man is God's invention, what inthe world was he thinking?

Ever see our first few attempts at inventing stuff? Cars, fashion, wigs, computers, planes, the list is endless... Maybe we were his first shot at humane beings, I guess that's why he stuck us in this part of the universe, so far away from any other creatures out there!!!

I think you might have something there. What if in fact we weren't even the first attempt?

What if the first attempts came looking for us

Then find us, but luckily his more successful projects come to our rescue. :D

Sounds like a plan Gary, drop that Epic Fantasy Crap and write some Sci Fi!!!

I jest of course, Epic Fantasy is called 'Epic' for a reason.

Really interesting thoughts though, in a world building way. What came before, and all that. I can just imagine the possibilities - all the previous failures!! WOW!

It reminds me of the scene in Alien 4, when Ripley finds all the failed clones before her.

I like the idea that perhaps an earlier attempt is not necessarily less intelligent (perhaps more) than us, they are just evil through and through, and they develop the capability to find us... Yikes.

Or maybe we are the evil progeny

The key to this theme is how we discover that they existed. The arm of the Statue of Liberty sticking out of the sand has been used way too often.
