I'll bite, Joe.

How exactly are the universe and possibilities connected? Is possibility a characteristic of a universe? Is it an attribute? Is it a basic component? How are they so inextricably linked that what is true of one must be true of the other? The universe contains stars, for example. Does possibility contain stars or are stars a manifestation of possibility?.

I never said they were.
I was basically responding to the whole Nietzsche recurrence theory with the idea that if the universe is infinite, how could every possible event be played out and then reoccur like some sort of cosmic deja vu.
If the universe is infinite then how can it's possibilites be finite?

I guess this is the explanation..

finite number of particles, infinite time span. that's the theory. infinite number of recurrences in a infinite time period with a finite number of particles.

Finite particles?
That's a little hard to prove.

Hey man, this is speculative philosophy! Who needs to prove anything?

Yeah, and he was writing before quantuum theory arrived on stage. I'd speculate that virtual particles and the interconnectedness of everything would reinforce his vision.

I have less problem with the idea of recincarnation than I do with the continuous recurrence of events. I can see that it makes a neat explanation for deja vu but it seems overly complicated to me. Would build my speculation on interconnectedness and all being part of a composite deity. Then, the memories are that me can be recycled over and over without ever repeating. All it requires is a new wetware device to store the old and accumulate the new.

Also, I think I'd make a neat virtual particle, flitting in and out of existence on some writer's thread.

Again, I don't really believe that this was a theory he felt was scientifically sound, even by pre-quantum standards. It just struck a chord with him in so far as it provided an unprovable maxim for behaviour that reaffirmed his perspective on those attitudes he had been cultivating with regard to the overcoming of the contemporary self.
