Hi ALL

i was wondering if there were any sites i could visit that would help me make up place names.

I find the only point of reference i have is real world names. I am not sure that will really do for a fantasy story

I don’t know of any sites, but this is what I use to create unique names for places in my worlds. It is a bit time consuming, but it works for me. I have several foreign language dictionaries. I think of the attributes about the place I’m trying to name. For instance a lake that is known for its salty water. I look up salt and lake or water in the dictionaries. I make a list and then combine the words in a way that seems right to me. Sometimes I just combine two words, sometimes three. It just depends on what appeals to me. I know its complicated, sometimes I think I try to make things harder than they need to be. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have never thought about that thing with the dictionaries. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Wish I could say it was my idea, but one of my English teachers stressed etymology. And I found it interesting too. If you think about it, most places have reasonable names - Rocky Mountains for instance or Rio Grand (Grand River). It just seemed a logical step to take. I wanted to use Latin, but I never could find a Latin to English dictionary. So mine is mostly a cross between Spanish and Italian. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well I was just reading the this post and noticed you needed help making names for places, well maybe this will help.

Go to http://www.langmaker.com/langmake/index.htm

it is a program that helps combine words and if you put in a pattern of consanants and vowels you can make new words and languages.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I have found this site very helpful and there is a variety of random name generators which you can either use on-line or off. Check out the fantasy name generator - it's a hoot!
