I read Hawkwood's Voyage and didn't quite see what was so great about it.
Some others have different opinions, though:
new Kearney? (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7669&highlight=Kearney)
Has anyone read anything by these two authors? (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9555&highlight=Kearney)

I think I might have that book on my shelf, but as yet unread. Thanks for the links for opinions, I was about to ask if it was any good.

I read that series and can definitely recommend it. I wasn't quite sure after the first book myself, but I'm glad I kept going. Kearney isn't in my top 5 favorite authors (probably not top 10 either), but he is a solid, entertaining author who, in my opinion, doesn't get enough attention.

An excellent series, though I think the main character is Corfu (sp?) and not Hawkwood. Take a read and I think you might enjoy it

I totally echo Godmage's thoughts. Keep going. It is an entertaining series that won't take too long to read.

I read 'A Different Kingdom' which is probably one of the only fantasies I can think of set against the troubles in northern ireland and written from the point of view of a protestant protagonist.
The above is probably a bit misleading: At the end of the day this is a fairly conventional re-telling of the rip van winkle story (or, more accurately, the story of Oisin and Tir na nOg, the land of eternal youth). But it weaves into the political backdrop of the late 60s, 70s in an unsettling way. Innocence lost, etc.
