My thoughts on the world/USA

  1. Power of the Dark Crystal

    by , January 8th, 2012 at 11:22 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I don't know about anyone else, but when this sequel was mentioned several years ago, I was very excited. Yes, the first movie was a child of the 80's and suffers a little but the uniqueness and depth of the world always made it a favorite of mind. I had high hopes the sequel would be able to keep this uniqueness; however, as time pushes the envelope of movie making further, I worry about the affects on the movie. I constantly check for any news but there stills seems to be little although the ...
  2. Confidence and Delusion Part II

    by , December 31st, 2011 at 01:05 PM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
A sad facet of the debt based economy we have created is the ability to buy and sell debt to other parties. Again, this was a program created to help sell more products by having investors with money buy debt off the books of banks at a discount rate in hopes of making a profit off the remaining interest paid on the debt. The banks get more money to lend along with some of the profit and the investor gets the difference in profit from what they paid the bank and the total repayment of the debt ...
  3. Confidence and Delusion

Many Americans are asking themselves why our economy is failing. They want to understand why the economy of the greatest democracy in the modern world is sinking like a lead brick. The answers, in the end, come down to the very human failings of greed, sloth, neglect, and the list goes on. These are the basic reasons for the failure of every human endeavor in the long run, but if you want to understand some of the mechanics of our current situation and what I think could be done to reverse their ...
  4. We Hold These Truths

    by , December 14th, 2011 at 08:46 PM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I have a question for American Historians. While freedom from religious persecution was part of the framework our founding fathers built into our form of government, was this in any way the impetus for our breaking away from England? There are many political groups that try to brainwash American Citizen into believing that freedom from religious persecution was one of the corner stones, if not the foundation, of our drive toward independence.

If I remember my history lessons correctly; ...
  5. Excuse Me, I am Running for Congress

    by , December 14th, 2011 at 07:43 PM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I would like to suggest a way to reform campaign financing. First, I will say that my idea, of course, will need consideration by others before it is a fully fledged proposal, but I would like to lay out the foundations here. The main component of my idea is that a person seeking re-election to the Congress or Senate would have a set amount of money allocated to them by the government for their campaign. The idea being that no more money could then be given to the campaigner from outside sources ...
  6. Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder but Viagra gets the job done.

    by , December 6th, 2011 at 06:56 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I just have a question for the right to lifers, "if, as you state, that contraceptives promote sexual promiscuity, then what about all the erectile dysfunction medicines flooding the market? I am disgusted at the blatant sales tactics of the makers of these pills. They are endorsing sexual activity regularly on TV at all hours of the day. In addition, I am being forced to pay, through my insurance premiums, for something that should be an elective medicine. Peoples lives are not at stake ...

  7. Health Care Mandate

    by , December 2nd, 2011 at 05:59 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
Get ready for a shocker, I actually agree with a Republican! I beleive congress made a mistake in its execution of health care reform by making it a federal mandate. However, I do beleive in the reasoning behind the idea, just not the execution.

Mitt Romney has instituted a mandated program in his state and it seems to be working well. He has also stated that, if he became president, he would not force the program on the country, but let each state choose to enlist or not. I ...
  8. This is our country!

    by , November 23rd, 2011 at 09:35 PM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I happened to catch a news bit on the Penn State scandal where it was said that one of the children who came forward was being bullied in school for getting Joe Paterno fired. The bullying was so bad that he had to be taken out of school. This is a horrible state of affairs, which is reflected so well in the overall culture of our country.

Taking out your anger on the victim who blew the whistle, at great risk to himself, because you are mad at them for destroying your illusions ...

  9. Oh, Well

    by , November 23rd, 2011 at 06:39 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
By the way, I wish to apologize to anyone who feels I place to much polotics into a site that should mostly be about our shared passion, SFF.

I do love the genre very, very much and some of my ideas have been shaped by the minds and ideas that are part of my favorite books. However, as I have gained my own voice over the years, this site has been the first place where I could really express my thoughts. Rest assured that I am an avid reader of SFF and am still writing stories. ...
  10. More questions the 99% should demand answers for

    by , November 23rd, 2011 at 06:28 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
If the Republican led congress is so focused on debt reduction, why are they not proposing equal cuts in their own entitlements such as their own medical coverage? If they want people to take them seriously, they should be willing to give up all of their benefits and live like the people they don't beleive deserve benefits.

Why should tax payers foot the bill when they are getting paid so well and getting help from their rich backers? Why not demand that their medical benefits be ...

  11. They just don't respect life like we do.

    by , November 2nd, 2011 at 03:09 AM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
I have heard this many times throughout my life but, as I get older and hopefully wiser, I find myself questioning this statement. I guess this goes back to the reason I wrote “The Parable of Doubt”. I not only feel the need to doubt the actions of religious leaders but also of human leadership in general. More importantly, I feel the need to question the truth of people who use such statements to differentiate America from other parts of the world.

First off, I am aware of many ...

  13. Thoughts I did not think much about at the time

    by , September 10th, 2011 at 07:41 PM (Rob Garbin's Blog)
You know that feeling you get when you look back at certain ideas you had when you were younger but life made you shove them aside until much later. When you do remember, you say to yourself "Wow, I was actually right." Well I think I'll post about two of them.

The first has to do with the Dow Jones Industrials. Back in 1982 through 1984 I was in senior high school and Ronald Reagan was our President. I was just learning about the roll of the NYSE in our economy from, ...

  14. Food for Thought

Technology is your friend. Technology will solve all of our problems. Technology will seriously muck up your life if you don't understand all of its implications! Just ask Anthony Weiner.

Quick question, do you understand all the things that go on in the background on your computer, or do you trust implicitly those that designed the hardware and software? Anthony Weiner learned the hard way that your stupidity gets stored somewhere and it can be dug up. Another question, how ...

  15. Feedback Loop

I have heard it said many times that America's Democratic Capitalist society is the best form of government around. Mostly by Republicans that wrap themselves up in their favorite illusion along with an American Flag and a big corporate donation (Democrats are just as guilty). If they are right then, why are we drowning in debt?

If this form of government works so well, why are we in debt to the tune of $45,000 per U.S. citizen, which is higher than that of a Greek citizen at $44,000? ...
