It was the storm that would forever change the course of human destiny.
A small, curly-haired boy sat frozen in anticipation, watching it from the edge of an old, olive-colored chair. From his seat in front of a large living room window, he peered out into the night, gazing in awe at the fierce, frequent displays of lightning which appeared in stark contrast to the blackness of the dark, western night.
“Hello, Alistair, this is Linda Zimmerman at S.E.T.I. I’ve got the granddaddy of all signals. There are two coming from the same quadrant of space. They’re definitely not ours, but guess what? One of them’s in the neighborhood!”
“What? Please tell me where they are!”
Linda provided the location and waited several moments while the observatory on the other side of the planet pointed its own radio telescope to the same patch of sky. A short time later the voice came back through the
