Contemporary FTL drives are based upon the ancient concept of the Alcubierre drive. The concept relies upon expanding space-time behind a ship and shrinking the fabric of space in front of it. The ship itself does not move, space-time slides beneath the ship. Creating these shifts in space-time can be achieved by the use of a dark energy bubble. The trick is to position the ship on the meniscus of the bubble in order to create the effect needed for virtual propulsion.
The bubble itself is created by injecting antimatter into a black hole. The black hole converts the antimatter into dark energy, which is then formed into a bubble using an AEG. The AEG allows the correct positioning of the bubble creating the illusion of faster than light travel. Energy sinks are required to dissipate the energy in a controlled manner decreasing the size of the bubble bringing the ship to a relative stop. Bubbles have to be shut down slowly in order to maintain ship integrity. If the position of the ship with respect to the bubble cannot be controlled, space-time distortions could have an adverse affect on the ship and its crew.
