Looking for a Plot?

Rate this Entry
I've started doing some posting on Yahoo's "Answers" site, and I'm surprised - also amazed and appalled - at the number of people who write something along the lines of "I want to be a writer. Somebody give me ideas for plots/characters/all of the above." Granted, a lot of those are kids (early teens or younger), but I worry that some of them may be young adults (or not-so-young adults). What's happening to imagination and the desire to create-it-yourself? Even at 11 or 12 or 15, I would never have asked someone else to provide me with a plot or names/descriptions of my characters.
I worry that we're raising a generation (or more than one) of people with no, or limited, imagination. If it's true, it's worse than sad.

No more than any generation that has gone before them.

What annoys me is when you get folks posting on writing forums, saying, "I have this idea/plot/characters/200,000 words of rubbish I have written, now I need a writer to beat it into shape/write the novel, so I can be a best seller and have lots of money!"

Unfortunately, Holbrook, you're right about the imagination part. As for the idea/plot/characters, you can always counter-offer to ghost-write the novel for a share of the profits.
