Following another conversation about the decreasing numbers of people reading, I was made aware of THIS ARTICLE about the decline of UK libraries and the need to fight for their survival.
Whilst I think that the decline of libraries may be partly due to the increasing ability of people to buy their own copies cheaply, I still think they are of value.
I do sympathise with the old-fashioned idea that 'libraries are places to read', I accept that these days competing with the computer game, the DVD, the iphone and the computer isn't easy.
If the libraries are 'for the people' then perhaps we should be grateful that the library allows access to the wider world, not just through books.
However, the old fogey in me looks back nostalgically to those days when I could sit and read peacefully in a library, when there was an untapped world to be explored, and I couldn't afford my own books...
