Starting Fast

Rate this Entry
I've been reading deeply for quite a while into fitness and health, though never put as much of it into practise as I should, and lately I came across the idea of fasting.

Now, not eating for longer periods of time does give me headaches and the appeal of not eating is limited to say the least. However, after the epic fail of last year in regards to healthy easting and exercise I'm willing to try some new things.

The science behind fasting I'm not entirely sold on but proof is in the trying rather than the wondering. So between 9pm yesterday evening and 3pm this afternoon all I did was drink, mostly water and tea with the odd glass of Pepsi Max. (I read that going 24 hours without food straight away is kinda dumb, surprise, so I'm working my way up.)

It wasn't too bad, I got up late as it was day two of a four day holiday (woot!) and although I struggled a bit at lunchtime in the end I could have done a few more hours. For me it killed two birds with one stone - obviously I've consumed a lot less calories than normal, especially given I have a tendency to binge on weekends, but I've also drunk more water than I usually would. Two of my targets to losing weight this year.

Will it work? Will I stick with it? Who knows but I'm going to try Friday night to Saturday evening for the next month and see what happens. Cross your fingers and lock your fridges in support

Actually it is quite a bad way. You will tend to eat more when you do eat rather than you would normally.

Actually, the best way to diet I have found is actually the weightwatchers pro point method, yes I know I can here you muttering "weightwatchers!" But it does help you monitor what you eat and gets you to eat healthy stuff as that normally has no, of few points. From Sept to the middle of Dec I lost 22 lbs on the plan, not a fast weight loss but a steady one. I am aiming to lose another 20-30 by Easter...

Yeah - I have to agree with Holbrook - not a good idea. I do fast once in a while when I've eaten something that is way bad for me, like cheese (I'm lactose intolerant), but otherwise, it may work for a while, but you'll eat double after.

I've never tried weight watchers, but I can attest to the BodyBugg. It works in that it is just another tool to show you just how little food one needs to survive, no, thrive on. I lose weight with 1400 to 1600 calories consumed a day and maintain my weight with a moderate active lifestyle on about 1800 to 1900 calories a day.

There's no magic to it. Calories in must equal calories out if you want to maintain your weight.

EDIT: But I'll lock my fridge just for you.

I'm afraid for me fasting only worked to drop weight for tournaments (I used to compete in the 62-67kg division in Taekwondo). I could drop 2 kilos in 3 days by also drinking heaps of water before hand then just not drinking before weigh in... but it is definatly no good for long term...

Good luck with this though, you never know as everybody is different and what works for some doesn't work for others.

Alternatively, you could always put your hand up for the next survivor...

Thank you all for your thoughts, strong case against it and it does seem like it will come down to how effective it is for the metabolism and whether I overeat afterwards. TBH after the first one on the weekend mentally I actually felt sharper than I have in ages and I wasn't too hungry by the end. Don't go unlocking those fridges just yet though

The two big things you need to do is

    1. portion control. Use a smaller plate and slowly reduce the size of your meals.

    2. Increase the activity.

Eat less and Exercise more Such cruelty Also for me snacking is a huge thing at the new job, adds up quickly to a lot more calories than I thought I was eating.

Tell me about it! My wedding is in October and I've actually taken up... jogging. The horror... the pain! Well, a little less pain now that I've tought my labrador to run with me and not into me...

I've been told that weight loss is as simple as less in, more out (exercise) = weight loss. Great in theory, but with more out, you tend to feel the need for more in and one deserves that ice-cream for working out so hard right?

Likewise, we have a biscuit tin and at the moment there are still lots of chocs left over from Christmas.

Stop the snacking or take fruit cut into chunks, I do. Also home made veg soups are filling, but not as heavy in cals as some snacks I tend to take a bowl and warm it up for lunch.

My worse time is when I get in from work. We don't eat normally till 8.30 when my hubby gets in, but I get in around 6:45! So it is very hard then.
