ok just curious, does anyone remember the first fantasy/ sci fi book they ever read?
mine was the hobbit. ah i was young and nieve, those were the days. any way have just reread it after a six year break, forgot how good it was! Bel http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif |
My first sci-fi/fantasy book was "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" by Robert H.
Ahhh the good old days! |
My first was the Hobbit, too, and you Belderan wasn't even born back then.
Pah, now you made me feel old and grumpy http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif |
My first was LotR.
|
It was Magician by Raymond.E.Feist. A friend reccomended it.
|
Mine was the Hobbit too. I was 7, so that was 26 years ago.
That is really scary. |
My first Sci-Fi novel was "Star Wars: X-Wing:Rogue Squadron" by Michael Stackpole, the book that started my Star Wars and sci-fi novel fandom! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif That was about three years ago.
My first fantasy novel was "LOTR: Part I: The Fellowship of the Ring" I read the LOTR Trilogy before I read "The Hobbit". And believe it or not, "The Hobbit" tied up a few loose ends for me! But not as many loose ends as will be tied up when I read "The Silmarillion", which is definitely one of the novels on my "TO BUY AND READ" list! It was about two years ago when I started reading fantasy novels, of which I owe a big debt to my good friend, Jonathon, who introduced me to the genre! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Does "The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe" count? If not, then it was some TSR book for junior readers... don't remember the name anymore. First Sci-Fi book was Bionic Commando ... (written by F.X. Nine, and based on the Bionic Commando nintendo game... kik a$$!)
|
I have no idea what was my first sci fi book...
My first fantasy book was The Hobbit, and i like it more than i like The Lord of the Rings. Although i did read some books that might be considerd fantasy before that, some Tarzan books were prettty fantastic and Erich Kastner's The 35th of May was pretty fantastic too. Edgar Rice Burroughs and Erich Kastner are two of my favorite childhood authors... |
Id say that the lion the witch and the wardrobe counts, it was my first one, if it doesnt well then the hobbit
|
Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey
|
F: Conan of the Isles by Carter & deCamp.
SF: Destiny Doll by C. D. Simak. H: (not sure here which was 1st and which 2nd) The Rats by James Herbert or Salem's Lot by King. |
The Hobbit
|
I read The Chronicles of Narnia when I was 10. After that it was The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when I was 12.
|
Oh those golden halycon days, when I was a child, and a school teacher read out The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to the whole class. I nagged and nagged my perents to get me the other books... and thus I was hooked.
From that I went onto The Hobbit, (thanks Dad http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif), and this led to The Lord of the Rings, I thought at first I was still reading 'childrens' fantasy, but the later chapters got more serious and darker, and I consider LOTR to be the first 'true' fantasy book I read. Maybe this is why Tolkien will alway be my favourite, for sentimental reasons... and FitzChivlary, I make no apologies, before you start!!! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif |
The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe or Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart,i was a bit young when i read that and didn't understand alot of it.
|
Dennizm, why do you think that it bothers me that your favorite fantasy is Tolkien?
All my arguements were when Tolkien readers tried to suggest that Tolkien is the best fantasy author and other opinions don't matter. I have no problem with one's personal taste. |
The hobbit, thx to a MSX computer game
|
FitzChivlary... I was joking, a little friendly banter, but I agree with your comments. I don't think Tolkien is 'the be all, and end all,' of fantasy either... sorry about that.
|
I read my first fantasy book when I was six, but can't for the life of me remember what it is called, although I've been trying to for months! So if anyone knows of a children's book about an orphan girl with magical powers that has a purple cover, let me know the title! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif Then on to the Chronicles of Narnia, which are still among my favorite books.
|
Tolkien's LOTR would be my first Fantasy. I read it when i was 8-10 years old i think...
Ah.. the 30th post! (= [This message has been edited by EE (edited June 25, 2001).] |
Does anyone think Enid Blytons Magical Faraway Tree books count?
I was constantly climbing up trees hoping for there to be something at the top apart from more leaves as a child... |
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, but it was Dragons of Autumn Twilight which really got me hooked on Fantasy when I was just a wee nipper.
|
Eventine i used to love the faraway tree! my dad used to read a chapter to me every night, definetly one of my fave books at the time, well that was a nice little trip down memory lane!
luv Bel http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif |
