Okay maybe I exaggerate for effect, but you know what I mean.
I only read the (first?) Dragonlance trilogy, way back in the day, but I'm sure they didn't. While labelling one's moral alignment is a useful tool for charting an RPG character's development, it would (as PeteMC says) be a disastrous mistep in a story, novel or otherwise. Readers want to learn for themselves if a character's inner life meshes or clashes with what the world sees them as, and blurting out "HE'S INHERENTLY GOOD" until "HE TURNED BAD JUST THEN" would be... well, come to think of it that's more or less what happens with the villains in Dan Brown's fiction, actually. I'm sure that's warning enough for us all.Quote:
