Books on Mars
How many books are they and please recommend them of human colonisation of Mars?
|
Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars. The Martian Chronicles I think
Kim Stanley Robinson Not got round to reading them though- but plenty of people here have. Type red mars into amazon and you get quite a lot of books on colonisation of mars- mainly non fiction though |
There's an awful lot Thomas.
A book called White Mars by Brian Aldiss was an alternative response to the KS Robinson books. Try - Red Planet and Podkayne of Mars by Robert Heinlein, (Podkayne doesn't deal too much with Mars though!), Moving Mars by Greg Bear, the Martian Chronicles is by Ray Bradbury, Arthur C Clarke's The Sands of Mars (now sadly out of date I think), More recently Mars Underground by William K Hartmann and Climbing Olympus by Kevin J Anderson spring to mind though the Anderson is nothing too groundbreaking. Personal faves are the Kim Stanley Robinson series, The Bradbury and the Greg Bear. The Arthur C Clarke I like but it is very dated now. I like the Heinleins but they're juvenile novels and not to everyone's tastes. Try also this link which is a little old now but covers quite a lot. look down at the Mars section: http://www.magicdragon.com/UltimateS...hat.html#space Hope this helps! Hobbit |
As already mentioned Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy is an excellent, realistic, very readable and beautifully written account of the colonisation and terraforming of Mars.
I'll also second Greg Bear's Moving Mars, where they're already there but then go about, well... as the title says.A great read. I also loved Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, it's more poetic and at times almost surrealistic than the other Mars books mentioned here. But highly recommended. Philip K Dick's Martian Time-Slip is weird and fascinating. A sort of 1960's American suburbia on a colonised Mars. Oh, and I can't mention Mars without confessing to really enjoying the couple of Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars books I've read. True, they're not about the colonisation of the Red Planet, but they're set there and they're great simple, colourful fun. :D |
Don't forget Mars and Return to Mars by Ben Bova. Both are excellent books. Also Moving Mars by Greg Bear. Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury (maybe too obvious, but hey).

...and I never pass up a chance to recommend Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars, a series which I think has one Nebula and two Hugos to its name... or is it the other way around? A major award-winner anyway. Sensitive, visionary and yes, they're fun to read, as well. My all-time favorite SF series. :)
Second to them, Marswise, I like Moving Mars by Greg Bear. |
I'm not going to recommend the Red/Green/Blue Trilogy --I've done it so many times. It is however the best Mars' colonisation series I've ever read. :)

Read Philip K. Dick's short story: "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." The movie "Total Recall" is based on it. It's a great story involving Mars.
