God help me, I'm trying. I kept at it and managed to get through the first book, a little over a hundred pages in, and find Downbelow Station almost unreadable. I had no preconceived notions going in, no idea what to expect, although I'll admit to being somewhat tainted by the infinitely more enjoyable novel (Spin) I just finished reading today. I hesitate to ask if it gets any better as the problem for me is not so much the story but the author's disjointed and almost purposely unengaging narrative style.
In my attempt to work my way through all of the selections in this book club, I've so far read 21 books and only given up on one (Elizabeth Bear's Hammered). This may well be the second. Am I not giving this book a fair shake? Do things pick up in Book Two of the novel? Is suffering Cherryh's tedious writing style a worthy sacrifice enroute to an ultimately rewarding read?
