1 Oct. 2007 for A Dance with Dragons on Amazon
I just came across this on Amazon. Is this more or less the exact date that the book is going to be published or is it something I shouldn't take to serious?
Here's the link:

I wouldn't hold much store in it, as the release date for A Feast for Crows was set on Amazon for various dates in 2004 for awhile.
However, based on Martin's most recent updates (he hopes to have it finished by the end of 2006), Fall 2007 does accord with his timetable.

George regularly points out at his website that he will be the only official source of such news - everything else is pure speculation. As this is.
Long term Martin readers will remember the orders for Feast when it was due out in 2003....
... so I guess it is possible, though definitely not definite.

As Hobbit said, the only official information is at georgerrmartin.com, in THIS specific section.
Sure, we can hope that Amazon's date turns out to be true, but to do anything more than hope would be pointless.

I think this is a reasonable date for release, given the current stage GRRM is at with the writing, but of course only he knows and I'm sure he'll reveal all in due course.

Don't ever, ever, ever trust Amazon for release dates. They regularly make them up; as others have said, the only site to trust is www.georgerrmartin.com

*sigh*
The Amazon dates are never right. However, it still reminds me how long I'm going to have to wait for this book to be out. I doubt it will be out sooner than what they have listed.
Ah well.

My understanding is that Bantam and George himself are keen to get the book handed in by the end of December or the end of January at the latest, which would allow for UK publication in late June/early July 2007, with the USA following 4-6 weeks later. Obviously this is completely dependent on if George does get the book finished by this time. However, the fact that recently he's stopped saying he's 'writing' the book and is now working on 'finishing' it is hopeful. Essentially, when GRRM announces the book is finished, expect publication to follow 5-6 months later.
October would be at the later end of possible release dates, but certainly possible, especially if the publishers decide to target the Christmas market. It's been pointed out that no ASoIaF book has been published before a listed Amazon release date, only after (although several of the Malazan books and I believe one of the Wheel of Time books have been published earlier).

November 12th, 2006, 09:00 PM #9I don't mean to be a downer, but I think we all might as well just accept the long waits for these books. The two books after DANCE will probably take much longer (considering that nearly half of this one came from the edit of FEAST).The Amazon dates are never right. However, it still reminds me how long I'm going to have to wait for this book to be out. I doubt it will be out sooner than what they have listed.
The only option is to find something else that's good to read, and just don't think about it. The books will get here when they get here.

I'd have to second your pessimism here. if you consider that dance is, in effect, the second half of book four, and that book three was published in 2000, we could be in for a long wait for the winds of winter. it will be some task for george to take ALL the characters from where they are at the end of feast/dance to a point where the end is in sight.

I know I shouldn't be mad at an author for the downtime between books but i still get irked, as I'm sure he, himself is, considering his early estimates put A Dance with Dragon as almost half finished and was "devoutly hoping" that it would "be along" sometime next year (written as of june 2005 and published in the back of Feast of Crows). He might as well give up on throwing out guesses like that as he generally takes quite awhile to finish his books (with good reason seeing as they can border on and above the 1k page mark).

GRRM had 35-40% of material for ADWD ready when he finished AFFC. However, all of this material has been rewritten for ADWD. The Jon Snow chapters, for example, have been completely reworked and the first two Daenerys chapters have been substantially altered from their first readings of two or three years ago to their latest forms (most notably seen in the spoiler chapter in AFFC).
The time delay on ADWD is due to his publishers asking George after he wrote that note to undertake a much bigger and longer book tour than they first mooted. George agreed: after five years cooped up in a study writing, getting out and seeing his fans was an irresistable temptation, along with the prospect of a fully paid-up trip to Canada and Europe. There was also the Ice Dragon tour, which he didn't forsee at all back when he wrote the note, and the slight problem of his house being half knocked down and then rebuilt in renovations. Should he have changed the note for the trade and mass-market paperbacks to reflect this? Probably, but ironically the note is now accurate (since ADWD will be along next year, unless his recent reports about being on the last leg of finishing the book are totally bogus) when read from the perspective of the 2006 paperback release.
The Winds of Winter will certainly take longer, but assuming no more problems of AFFC proportions (the causal factors of which are well known), I'd estimate no more than 2.5-3 years, barring unforseen events.

Looks like GRRM is on his way to Jordans mistake. Dragging a series out for 15years before the end is even close.

The difference being that ASoIaF has been increased to seven books because it had too much plot to contain within six. Jordan's mistake was taking a fantastic six-book idea, a very good eight-book idea or even a passable ten-book idea and stretching it out to twelve (thirteen, if as seems possible the last book gets too long and has to be split), thus necessitating the need for unnecessary filler.

The Fact is that no one knows when this book will be released George hopes early 2007, but that could soon turn into early 08. I hate waiting, but if they keep impressing me the way they are its well worth the wait. I suggest filling your time with some other great books, I highly recommend the Farseer Trilogy if you haven't read it yet, or any other Robin Hobb books. Tad William's Otherland series is decent, very lenghty, but with the long wait for aSoIaF you got plenty of time. Also The Mists Of Avalon was a good read.
