What if Maerad or her mother had known Cai was alive? (It probably wouldn't have affected the story very much but it would've changed Maerad's perspective a lot, I think, knowing her brother was out there somewhere.)

What if Milana had survived her encounter with Enkir at the sacking, or even not had the encounter in the first place? Would she still be alive? If so, what if she'd gotten them out of the Cot before Cadvan ever turned up?

Now there's a thought. Pellinor does seem to be at the centre of things in a way, doesn't it? I guess because it was such a defining factor in Maerad's life, and what defines her defines the quest...I think she probably still would have been the One, though. Just the One living under different circumstances.

I don't think she would have been the one, because the prophecy speaks of someone unschooled, and from the mountains, therefore, she wouldt fit the prophecy anymore
