Does anyone remember a story about a dog called "Homer" that was exceptionally smart, and turned out to be a disguised alien?

When I was a kid, I had a very clever dog, and I called him "Homer" after this story- but I can't recall the author, and I've not been able to find anything on Google.

Any ideas?
