The 3 newest additions (Shannara, Sword of Truth, and Troy) are all deleted by the Moderators. Why????

Does that mean if I start a new thread about Steven King's "Dark Tower" Series, it will be deleted too? If so let's me know so I won't have to waste my time.

Anyway, I hope this thread will help any newbies to find fantasy series to read.

A former critic, I love any chance to rate things out of 10. Was the idea to rate the ones above, or other series we've read. I've only read four of yours so here goes. I don't like to use decimal points unless it's a half.

Lord of the Rings - 8
    Malazan - 9
    Wheel of Time - 6
A song of Ice and Fire - 9
    The Swans War - 6.5
The Well of Echoes - 7
    Prince of Nothing - 7
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn - 8
    Farseer - 7.5

Oh oh! Points! Can't get anymore insightful about books than that eh?

Farseer by Robin Hobb. Oops, sorry we're not mentioning authors, I'll start again.

    Farseer: 9.99999
    ASOIAF: 9.99998
    Tawny Man: 9.99997
    Liveships: 9.99996

Eh, run out of point energy, as this seems kinda pointless so I'll go look at posts about the actual books and authors now.

Forgive the sarcasm, but I just truly don't see...why? I mean, why? What is this doing?

Its fun to see how other readers rate books- their overall lists give an approximation of what their tastes are like, and you can then try new series you're interested in.

I would argue that 'discussion' consists of words, rather than a bunch of arguably meaningless numbers. The only way we can get to know each other here, and therefore each other's tastes, is by talking. A long, long stream of numbers doesn't hold my attention. I mean really - what on earth is the difference between 7.2 and 7.4? Even a few lines of meaningful opinion is preferable, and more informative, than this.

I truly am bewildered. The 'fun' side of it, ok, I can see that. But as a means to gain information on what book to pick up next?

I actually agree with many of your ratings.. I'll have to take down some of your best book reads and add them to my list of to read ; ).

It doesn't beat a long and good discussion about why we like a book (I don't know where you got "defining discussion" from though- I never mentioned it) but- say I notice that someone else has very similar taste to me, rating many of the same series as I do highly and rating many of the series I dislike low. I then see that he has a series I haven't read marked very high- hence I decide to check out it's plot description and perhaps buy the first book. You don't need discussions to find new books to read.

As for the differences between 7.2 and 7.4- it may seem a bit silly, but this is how I do it. I give a series a whole number rating- say 9, or 8. I then look at other books I give a 9, and see how I like it compared to those. The decimal point can be a bit random, but the point is that it should be lower than series I like better and higher than series I like less.
