Hook me in 25 words or less

For Konrad's before mine- perhaps a bit too abstract, and I've always hated complex sentences to start off a story. That's just me though.


Before one of my own, here's the opener to Good Omens that I've always loved.

"It was a nice day. All the days had been nice. There had been rather more than seven of them so far, and rain hadn't been invented yet."


Now here's one of my own:

"It is a widely known fact that time is, at best, a loose suggestion. Most people won’t accept this fact, but they know it none-the-less."

Here's another opener to another story of mine that follows the same character.

"Shortly after realizing that he was Plato, Brandon threw himself of the top of the twenty-four story building. On the way down, he had..."

"The armies had fought for days unending, but the real desecration was just about to begin and for nothing more then arrogance."

This sounded like a fun challenge. Here are a few of my entries.

'A cold and miserable rain had been falling on Washington D.C. for a week, casting a damp and oppressive pall over the city.'

'It was morning in the Cascade Mountains, that stone backbone splitting the state of Washington into east and west. Vast evergreen forests carpeted the sides of snow-capped peaks, while icy glaciers lay between the alpine ridges like walls of frozen surf.'

(from the novel 'The Corona Incident')

'David Jennings winced in pain as another blast of wind hit the SnoCat, its tremendous force bouncing him into the door panel. Cursing, he kept both hands tight on the steering wheel as he continued fighting through the storm.'

The eyes, narrowed in distaste at someone inferior to his powers, the way the lip curled up in disgusted amusement as I stumbled slightly.

For a few brief seconds, my image softened. Then it fell back into that sarcastic, toughened sneer I had begun to detest.

Not sure if they're the best I have.
