An interesting problem came up in Greg Egan's "Oceanic", although the story is set much latter than either the arrival on the planet or the appearance of the problem. There are also several books with archeological problems on planets with extinct alien life including John Brunner's excessively cheerful "Total Eclipse" for the oldies and slightly more recently the Jack McDevitt series starting with "The Engines of God".

Last year I read Jack McDevitt's THE ENGINES OF GOD, and I think it's a perfect example of what this thread is looking for. I haven't returned to read any of those Priscilla Hutchins books yet, but I intend to. I've heard they all have that sense of exploration and discovery that ENGINES has.
