Since i have some free time on my hands now, i decided to edit my post to enable it to encompass fantasy books that have been made into an omnibus edition to facilitate collectors like myself who prefer such editions

can i know why? because it's too draggy? or some other reasons? the one that turned me off was the greatbook of amber. the first book was superb. books 2-5 were still quite good. after that it went downhill. but i had to forcemyself to complete it

In fact, most of Moorcock's output has been reissued in omnibus format : Von Bek, The Eternal Champion, Corum, Hawkmoon, Elric of Melniboné, Stormbringer, Dancers at the End of Time, Sailing to Utopia, Count Brass...the list goes on.

Sorry, what I meant was that if there's a series I like, I prefer to buy each volume separately, rather than one giant Omnibus. For example, I have the Gormenghast omnibus, but I've just ordered the single-volume reprints which were recently released by Overlook Press.

I just don't like carrying around a huge book - and some of these Omnibus editions are pretty huge.

That makes plenty of sense! Silly me.

Personally, i bring out single volumes when i am out. I reserve the omnibus editions for home reading. I would think that omnibus editions would also save precious bookshelf space too.

Chronicles Of The Black Company (by Gene Wolfe) including first three books of The Black Company novels I believe.

Elric: The Stealer Of Souls (by Michael Moorcock) containing the novels that made Elric and his creator famous. Release date: February 19th

Roger Zelazny: The Chronicles Of Amber (by Roger Zelazny) containing first five of ten books on Amber. (Gollancz masterworks)

Monarchies of God Omnibus (by Paul Kearny) is to arrive this year if I'm not mistaken.

Dreamsongs (by GRRM) fall under this category, doesn't it?

There are some other highly recommended Authors who put out omnibuses: Ursula K Leguin and some other classics whose work is (long) out of print or hardly available.

I second all of those. I also have the omnibus for "Ultramarines" based off a game (it's better than it sounds).

Imagine WoT as an omnibus. That would probably be legally considered a weapon.

I see where the terminology of omnibus/anthology can get confusing now that you brought it up. The Complete Chronicles of Conan brings together The Conan Chronicles Volume 1 and Volume 2 into a single book, and i generally define an "omnibus" as multiple books in one book and "anthologies" as short story collections (single or multi author). So in the case of TCCOC, I'm not sure if the bringing together of two anthologies into a single book would just be a larger anthology or omnibus (since it is two books in one) .

The usual answer is that an anthology is a collection of (usually) short stories but put together by one editor (or a group of editors working together) in one book, often with a common link (eg: Wizards, or the author). An omnibus is either a collection of short stories (but usually novels) put together in one book. They do not have to be connected or related, and often the connection is that they are written by the same person/s.

Having said that, the dreaded genre trilogy falls nicely into this grouping, hence their popularity in SF/Fantasy.

But there are lots of exceptions!

I prefer onmibusses, for a couple of reasons.

1. I only have to buy one book!
2. It's orderly.
3. If three books actually constitute one story, my precious bodily fluids tell me it should be one book if possible.
