March 2008 BOTM: The Year of the Quiet Sun
Wilson Tucker's Year of the Quiet Sun is often regarded as a classic of the genre.
Published in 1970, the book tells of Brian Chaney, a scholar, who has been chosen to travel in time. He leaves his safe home in 1978, going to a world devastated by radiation and almost no one left.
A E Van Vogt wrote of the book:
"An H G Wells-type time machine takes this chilling story's anti-hero into a nightmare only-a-few-years-from-now future, which many people will feel we have earned by our treatment of minorities."
Tucker's awards and honors include the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer. The Year of the Quiet Sun won him the J.W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1976, as well as a nomination for a Nebula in 1970, and a Hugo nomination in 1971.
