Just to point out the obvious, Poe wrote short stories and poems.
Well, okay, there was one novel, but it was a short novel and I'm not sure I'd point anyone at it to get the true flavor of Poe's fiction.
Good stories that have stood the test of 150+ years:
"The Black Cat"
"The Tell-Tale Heart"
"The Cask of Amontillado"
"The Fall of the House of Usher"
"Bernice"
"The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"
"The Pit and the Pendulum"
These are just a few of the gems. And, what the heck, while you're reading the stories, don't forget to read the poem, "The Raven." Really. You'll thank me.

As for the poems, I always favored "The City in the Sea." And "To Helen," of course, but I guess that isn't horror...
I'm not sure I think of "Berenice" as a classic, since when people remember it they usual giggle as if at a shared joke. Dental horror! But shoot, I guess it's as much of a classic as Ghostbusters. Poe had a hokey side that we have a right to treasure. (His face is on my diningroom wall.)
