Publication, without a doubt.
Publication, without a doubt.
Thanks mate, means i dont have to wait and can get stuck into Deadhouse Gates!
Publication was definately the way to go. The delivery of some things would be spoiled with any other order I think.
Publication order, definitely. Internal chronology would match publication chronology if Erikson wanted it. If it doesn't, then there's a reason for it.
Where do the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach stories fit in to the Malazan tapestry?
Nowhere really. The only reason people say it's better for them to be read after Memories of Ice is that it was the book that introduced the two guys. But in fact it is the other way around. Erikson had already finished Blood Follows by the time he started writing MoI, so he decided to just introduce them there. Actually, one of the chapters of that book has this before it - "Where they tread, blood follows".
I apologize if this has been answered before but im down to the crippled god and stondwielder. Which should I read first?
I guess stonewielder.
If you've just finished Dust of Dreams go straight into The Crippled God, there is very little overlap between TCG and StoneWielder plus I think TCG reads better straight after DoD as it's technically one big book.
Is there any reason at all not to just simply read in publication order?
You definitely can. I only asked because those two came out withinmonths of each other if I'm not mistaken
Yeah they were pretty close, SE says in DoD I think that the last two books were actually one book, which was simply too big to be published as was. That's why I'd be inclined to read them back to back, for me Stonewielder was a slow burn that didn't really influence any of the events in TCG (I may be wrong it's been 6 months+ since I read it) and isn't all that great. I'd argue that ICE's novels are slowly declining in quality and that reading it first makes getting back into TCG harder.
A fresh attempt to create a decent reading/chronological order for the series:
1. Gardens of the Moon
2. Deadhouse Gates
3. Memories of Ice
4. House of Chains
5. Midnight Tides
6. Night of Knives
7. The Bonehunters
8. Return of the Crimson Guard
9. Reaper's Gale
10. Toll the Hounds
11. Stonewielder
12. Orb Sceptre Throne
13. Dust of Dreams
14. The Crippled God
You can probably switch #8 and #9 depending on preference. At the end of #7 the Bonehunters split with the Wickan/Malazan storyline. If you're interested in what happens next to the Malazans, proceed to #9, if you want to see more of the Wickan/Malazan situation, proceed to #8.
