New UK Mass-Market Paperback Edition of The Blade Itself:

I like. Would have liked more if the dude, who I assume is Logen, had a beard.

I love this new Michael Whelan that is used for the new collections of Roger Zelazny's works, it's beautiful and i think Whelan managed to capture the general spirit that all Zelazny works share.

There are several volumes to this project and each one has as cover a differnet part of this image.

I agree, replace the sword with a gun and it looks like the cover of a western, the guy looks like some comanche or apache.
    And is that a photo?

Yeah lol, looks like he could be on the cover of one of Stephen Kings Dark Tower books. Almost looks as bad as Brent Weeks books cover art.

I suspect neither of you have read the book (let alone the first post in the thread). If you had you would know that the poor person's Stuart period fashion depicted in the artwork is quite appropriate.

I like the cover to the Abercrombie book. Sure, the originals are superior, but that doesn't mean that ones like this should be discounted. If it brings in more readers, then so be it. All we have to do is look at Orbit's cover for Best Served Cold to see how this could have been far worse.

Oh yeah, it seems you can't criticize on this thread, forget it then. Back to my question though, is that a photo or a painting? i can't tell

I'm reading through the series right now and am just about finished the second book, it may be appropriate but that doesn't stop it be awful.

The cover to The Blade Itself is by Chris McGrath, who does all the US covers for The Dresden Files. Personally, I like it a lot. So does Joe A.

It's a painting that uses a photo look. I like that one, and it kind of surprises me a bit as it's for the mass market edition in the U.K., not the U.S. It sort of resembles the Gunslinger covers for King. The next two covers will have renderings of the other two main characters in the series on them.

And Fitz is correct -- the topic of this cover thread is positive comments on art covers. There are other cover threads and Abercrombie threads if you want to complain about the cover art.

Excellent. I'm not usually fond of Whelan's art, but that is striking and does, I agree, pick up on the spirit of Zelazny's work.

The reason I like it? Because of the small details which relate to Abercrombie's wiring, like the scars across the face and the missing middle finger on the hand holding the sword, the ragged coat, the crazy look in his eyes, etc. Apart from the lack of a beard, it's a near perfect depiction of Logen for mine. I also like the way the painting is framed with the yellow sky taking up alot of the space. Very striking. I think the originals are pretty good, but my preference is for this style, and I can't wait to see what McGrath does with the rest of the trilogy. I agree, much more in line with somehting you would expect on a US MMPB. As Rob says, McGrath usually does urban fantasy covers.
