Anticipated & Looking Forward to 2010

We've been running one of these threads every year as we look ahead to the releases in the coming year.

I'll get the easiest one off first,

A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin

Another one is The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rotfhuss

    Here's the remaining tally:
God of War by Matthew Stover - novelization of the best-selling, critically acclaimed PS2 video game
Shadowrise by Tad Williams (I haven't even read Shadowplay yet, but I've got it).
    Horns by Joe Hill
Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb (I know it comes out this year in the UK)
The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett
The Sorcerer's House by Gene Wolfe
Changes (new Dresden) by Jim Butcher
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Conquering Swords (sword & sorcery themed anthology) edited by Lou Anders and Jonathan Strahan

    Not known but hopeful -
New R. Scott Bakker, follow-up to The Judging Eye
The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

FWIW Locus regularly updates their Forthcoming Books listing, which is where I pulled some of the books.

    Looking forward to 2009

Well there's been a few interesting things coming out lately.

Yesterday Guy Gavriel Kay announced that he has a new novel coming out in April/May. It is called Under Heaven and "is a long, single-volume historical fantasy inspired by the extraordinary Tang Dynasty, essentially 8th century China".

Needless to say, that is exciting.

JV Jones has finished her 4th Sword of Shadows book, Watcher of the Dead. It's 432 pages and will be released in April as well.

Pat Rothfuss has finished a main draft of The Wise Man's Fear but it's been quiet now for a while in terms of confirming an actual release date. Spring 2010 is what is believed at this point, but DAW has been hush hush about it, as has Pat himself. Gollancz has scheduled it for April 2010 however, but that is tentative IMO.

Some positive buzz on Dance with Dragons from GRRM recently, whether or not he finished in October or by the end of the year, we'd be looking at Spring 2010 in either case. Wait and see if he can make it, but he seems more positive and more specific than usual.

Robin Hobb's Dragon Haven is supposed to come out in April or May as well, but we don't have a fixed listing yet. The book is done however.

I'm really looking forward to Peter Brett's The Desert Spear, also due in April.
Ken Scholes will have Antiphon out as well, 3rd book in his series, but no release date yet as he is at the finishing stages of writing it.

Still no word on Lynch's "Republic of Thieves".

There might possibly be a new Mark Newton Legends of the Red Sun novel, maybe Mark will be kind enough to fill us in, he has turned in the first draft.

The Orbit debut in January, Mr. Shivers by Robert Bennett, is one I'm really looking forward to. Synopsis sounds very cool.

is the time of the Great Depression. The dustbowl has turned the western skies red and thousands leave their homes seeking a better life. Marcus Connelly seeks not a new life, but a death - a death for the mysterious scarred man who murdered his daughter. And soon he learns that he is not alone. Countless others have lost someone to the scarred man. They band together to track him, but as they get closer, Connelly begins to suspect that the man they are hunting is more than human. As the pursuit becomes increasingly desperate, Connelly must decide just how much he is willing to sacrifice to get his revenge.
Other books I am interested in:

    Hyddenworld: Spring- William Horwood
Warriors anthology-edited by GRRM & Dozois- March, 736 pages
    Bitter Seeds-Tregillis- April
    Pinion-Jay Lake- April
    Horns-Hoe Hill- February
Wolfsangel-MD Lachlan - May( Uk only release)
    Shadowrise-Williams ( February)
Jade Man's Skin-Daniel Fox ( February)-sequel to Dragon in Chains.

Other stuff people might be interested in is a new Dan Simmons called Black Hills, anew novel by Connie Willis called Blackout. Synopsis can be found for both of these books on the net. Esslemont's Return of the Crimson Guard gets it's US release in January.

    Second half of 2010 maybe's:

Aspect Emperor book II, tentatively titled The White Luck Warrior-Bakker

It should come out by then if Bakker is somewhat keeping pace with his schedule but I wonder if it really will. I also wonder if the September 2010 release of his second thriller will impact the release of AE II.

"Northmen book" by Joe Abercrombie, tentatively scheduled for October. I really hope he can make it.

    The Dark Commands by Morgan-July

So the big ones with unconfirmed dates for me are books by Martin, Rothfuss, Lynch, Abercrombie, Scholes.

One that I'm really looking forward to is Way of Kings from Brandon Sanderson. I've been following his blog a bit, and he has the first revision on the book done and he says he expects that it will be released sometime next year.

Stonewielder by Ian Cameron Esslemont is provisionally listed for late 2010.

The Evolutionary Void by Hamilton might make Easter 2010. Al Reynolds has a new (unnamed) hard SF trilogy starting in 2010 (probably late 2010) as well.

Pratchett is aiming to release I Shall Wear Midnight, the fourth (and maybe final) Tiffany Aching sub-series Discworld novel.

Book 13 of The Wheel of Time is due November 2010, title still to be finalised.

Warriors, featuring the new Dunk 'n' Egg story by GRRM, is due in March 2010.

Mark Newton's follow-up to Nights of Villjamur is due mid-year as well.

Kearney's Monarchies of God omnibuses have fallen back to 2010. Exact date depends on what is going on with Solaris' sale.

China Mieville's next book is already complete but, as usual, there is a total lack of any information on it. I think this is the same book that was listed for a while as Kraken but Mieville delivered both it and The City and the City on the same day. The publishers didn't even know that The City and the City existed but were impressed enough by it to decide to release it first. From Mieville's comments it's unclear if this new book is set in Bas-Lag or it's his next novel which will be a return to his signature setting.

Kate Elliott's Cold Magic is a likely 2010 release. She's taking a break from Crossroads before returning with the fourth book, most likely in 2011 (although the fourth book isn't a continuation of the first three but a stand-alone set in the same world).

Wow, a lot of really exciting new releases to look forward to next year (and a new historical GGK? WIN). Thanks for putting this together.

If the new Kate Elliott is a stand-alone, and it gets a good reception, I'll definitely take a look at that. Other than that, my list of most-anticipated's probably looks like everyone else's.

from what I gathered in comments Bakker made in a recent interview, it's pretty unlikely we'll see the White Luck Warrior next year. I think that the second thriller has taken focus away from it and that Bakker is finding this trilogy a bit more daunting than the previous one.

A few others I can't wait to get my hands on are:

    David Durham The Other Lands
    Fiona McIntosh Tyrants Blood
    Michael J. Sullivan Nyphron Rising

Books I am looking forward to:

    The Desert Spear- Brett
    The Republic of Thieves-Lynch
    The Crippled God-Erikson
    The Wise Man's Fears-Rothfuss

    Assuming it comes out:
    A Dance With Dragons-Martin
    Stonewielder-Esslemont

And since I am a fan of the series I probably will get the Gods of War novelization, it will be a quick read, two days at the most.

    Quick question(s):

Can someone tell me if Redick's sequel to The Red Wolf Conspiracy and Morgan's sequel to The Steel Remains is due out next year?

    Optimistic arn't ya

Jennifer Fallon Palace of Impossible Dreams
Don't waste your time or money. The whole series was a huge drop in quality for her and the last one isn't any better.

    Scott Lynch Republic of Thieves
    J.V.Jones Watcher of the Dead
Patrick Rothfuss A Wise Man's Fears

I'll be happy with those three.

Wert is Cold Magic the break from Crossroads or the next book and is the stand alone a Jaran Novel?

Been lurking mostly, but a good anticipation thread is guaranteed to hook me in.

The second Redick, The Rats and the Ruling Sea, was to be out this August in the UK. It now seems to have moved to October, which could mean that it's not finished and will move again or just that the schedule was jiggered around. Del Rey still seems to be publishing their edition in the States in February next year, though that's according to amazon. The Steel Remains sequel, which I too yearn for, is currently indeed slated for July 2010, but "always in motion is the future".

Heather Mist mentioned The Other Lands by David Anthony Durham, which I'm curious to try as I thought Acacia had huge potential but in and of itself was more of a synopsis of a great thing than the great thing itself. That it seems will be out sooner than 2010, in September 09.

My own list features many of the usual suspects, including what I'm coming to think of as the three "big delayed fantasies": Lynch, Rothfuss, and Martin. Here's hoping, but again "always in motion is the future".

I'm also hoping to see Changes, the next Dresden Files book by the ever-working Jim Butcher next year, but this may not come to pass. At least it probably won't be out in the first half of the year. I listened to a podcast interview with him on his site a short while ago, and though he doesn't say for sure I get the impression he hasn't started it yet. Later: Oh, just checked amazon and they've got a page for the book claiming that it is indeed coming in April. Butcher's site, however, does not yet list the book, and the interview I listened to made it sound like he was not yet quite through with First Lord's Fury, coming out this Nov, so even at his usual extraordinary rate of fire how he would possibly find the time... Still, the ways of Butcher are mysterious.

I am hugely excited by the prospect of Brandon Sanderson starting a big long epic fantasy in The Way of Kings, [as well, of course, as the thirteenth WoT book which goes without saying because I am a fan.] There are, I think, very few authors from whom I would greet the announcement of a new huge epic with real enthusiasm, as though I hold several of them dear in terms of starting new series I am for the most part over the subgenre. Sanderson, though, is a writer I feel that I, as a reader, can trust with exactly this type of sprawling project.
