Well I guess you can't claim fire is an invention, we just sort of picked it up (ouch) from nature. However my personal favorite is related to it. Hot water for showers.

The wheel as an invention seems overrated. Didn't the Aztecs get by without it? The winch, another five letter ancient mechanism starting with w, might be as important.
