need help identifying horror short story from childhood

I remember reading this story in an anthology when I was a child. Unfortunately, my recollection of it is extremely vague. It involves a character who has something happen in his backyard. I think he owns a shop of some sort. Perhaps, he unlocks a different world in his backyard or some such thing. At the end of the story, he disappears forever into the yard.

I believe it may be a well-known story because I remember the anthology talking it up.
