Hi, I'm looking for a book. It's pretty old, and I can't remember much, but the main idea was that there were two races, and one was grinding the other up into this nutritious liquid to feed themselves.

One of the things that was so striking was the description. It was intensely detailed, like one might expect of Terry Goodkind's writing style. Everything about the culture was described in minute detail. It lived.

There was a scene in which a party was being held, and the drinks were served cold. You got your drink and then walked up to this fire fountain, held it in the flame, and the convection current mixed the drink. There was so much detail, and the culture seemed like any other here on Earth it was so well-portrayed.
