A friend told me about a book he read about the 1980s about a girl who's been genetically altered who gets marooned on an alien planet after sabotaging a terraforming project.

Tatooed on her arm is the number nine, which is supposed to be her sequence. Gene altered girls like herself were called "evo-steppers" which when I search for it gives me a lot of stepper motors.

Does anyone know this book? Possibly marketed as young adult.
