Why can't I send pms?

I tried to send a pm today, and was told I didn't have the authorization to access that feature.Huh? Is there something I missed when I signed up. I have searched the site, can't find anything that tells me what I need to do.

You can't do anything, the private message system is off limits to new members. In the past we've had people join up simply to spam the system with all kinds of advertising junk, so in keeping with our limitations on advertising/promotion we decided to restrict the system until we're happy a member won't send out 500 viagra pm's It doesn't take us long to figure out who's for real.

No, it's a fairly recent system change and one I thought we'd signposted somewhere. We'll have a look incase it causes more confusion, cheers
